Shannon Mikell is a homeschool educator who is excited to join Big River Academy’s faculty as a French instructor. She received her B.A. in French from the University of Florida and her M.A. in French from the University of South Florida. She earned her Ph.D. in French Language and Literature from Tulane University in New Orleans.
Homeschooling her own children has given Dr. Mikell a love for the homeschool community and a desire to help others pursue their studies in foreign languages. She hopes to instill in her students not only a love of learning for the French language but also an appreciation for French and francophone culture. Teaching at Big River Academy allows Dr. Mikell to combine her love of teaching and desire to follow Christ in every opportunity. Her classes will incorporate scripture, prayer, and a desire to reveal how God communicates to us as we explore communicating in French.
Dr. Mikell lives in southern Louisiana with her husband and her two children. Her husband of 30 years, Stephen, is a pediatrician. Her daughter, Emma, is a homeschool graduate and honors student at Samford University. Her son, Ethan, is a homeschooled high school student and talented musician. The last member of the family is one slightly grumpy tabby cat named Aslan. Dr. Mikell’s hobbies include reading, sewing, and buying new school supplies. In her spare time, she loves to travel (to France, of course!) but is also quite happy at home with her family. She can often be found cozily settled on the couch with a book in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.
