Navigating NCAA High School Courses

NCAA Approved core course

For student-athletes aspiring to compete at the collegiate level, meeting the NCAA eligibility requirements is essential. At Big River Academy, we understand the unique challenges faced by college bound student athletes who need flexibility while maintaining academic excellence. That’s why our NCAA-approved courses are designed to help high school athletes succeed both on and off the field.

What Are NCAA High School Courses?

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requires high school athletes to complete a specific set of core courses to qualify for college sports. These are often referred to as NCAA Core Courses and can be found through the NCAA eligibility center. These core courses include subjects like English, mathematics, natural/physical science, social science, and additional courses that enhance critical thinking. These courses must be completed with a strong academic performance to ensure athletes are prepared for the demands of college education.

Big River Academy’s NCAA-Approved Courses

Big River Academy is proud to offer NCAA-approved online courses that meet these core requirements. Our online high school curriculum is designed with the same rigor and structure as traditional schooling but offers the added flexibility student-athletes need. The Flexibility of Online Learning

One of the greatest benefits of enrolling in Big River Academy is the ability to learn on your own schedule. Unlike traditional schools that adhere to strict timelines, our program is designed with flexibility in mind, ensuring athletes can complete coursework at times that suit their busy schedules. This flexibility doesn’t mean sacrificing quality, however; each course is structured to prepare students thoroughly for college-level academics and NCAA eligibility.

Meeting NCAA Core Course Requirements

The NCAA requires high school athletes to complete 16 core courses. Here’s a breakdown of what that includes:

  • 4 years of English

  • 3 years of Math (Algebra I or higher)

  • 2 years of Natural/Physical Science (1 year of lab if offered by the school)

  • 1 extra year of English, Math, or Science

  • 2 years of Social Science

  • 4 years of extra courses (From any above areas or foreign language, non-doctrinal religion, or philosophy)

At Big River Academy, our courses cover all these requirements, and our experienced staff is available to guide families and students through the course selection process, ensuring that they meet NCAA standards.
